Use Audio Books for Home Decorating Inspiration

September 23, 2011

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so when most people look for decorating inspiration, they go to the pages of magazines.  And while the photos provided may feature perfect décor, there is one unfortunate drawback; they don’t always tell you how to get the style provided in their pages.  It’s a pretty good bet your living room does not look like the ones in celebrity homes, and the truth is that you couldn’t afford the wallpaper they used, much less the designer furnishings.  So while these photos will no doubt leave you looking on longingly, they really get you no closer to redecorating your own space.  You need someone to tell you how to do things like install flooring, put up wallpaper, and arrange your furniture accordingly for the type of space you have.  This is where audio books can help.

There are many audio books out there on the subjects of home repair, remodeling, redecorating, and the history of style (or the lowdown on hallmarks of different styles).  But why would you opt for an audio book instead of a traditional paper version?  There are actually several reasons.  Think for a moment; when was the last time you picked up a book?  Even those of us who make time in our busy schedules to sit down and read a book are much more likely to choose something light that will whisk us away from our worries for a while.  Most of us buy books on home repair but never even crack the cover.

An audio book, on the other hand, can be listened to just about anywhere.  You can pop it in the stereo on your evening commute and come home armed with the ideas and inspiration needed to start your renovations.  Or you can upload it to your MP3 player and listen while you walk the dog, go for a jog, julienne veggies for dinner, or even take a shower (with waterproof headphones).  The point is, you can get the information and impetus you need to move forward with redecorating anytime and anywhere.  It’s much harder to do with a regular book.

Of course, there is the added environmental bonus, as well, for those greenies out there looking to save a few trees.  Downloading MP3 files of audio books is a great way to live up to your eco-friendly standards.  No materials are needed to manufacturer pages or even discs, so this is the ultimate green way to “read” a book.

But what you’re really looking for is inspiration, and you can find it in spades in the wide world of audio books.  Whether you’ve purchased discount kitchen cabinets and need help to figure out how to hang them, you want to know how hard it is to reupholster furniture, or you simply want the 4-1-1 on what to look for in line and color in order to fit a particular style aesthetic, audio books can help.  They’ll give you all the inspiration and information you need to make your redecorating project a success; and they’ll make it a lot easier to find the time to participate.
