Audio Books on Weight Loss

June 10, 2011

There are many ways to go about losing weight: you can join a gym, take up jogging in your neighborhood, or even seek out an adult sports league within your community.  But at some point you may come to the realization that you need professional help in order to reach your goals.  Or perhaps you are suffering from a lack of motivation.  Maybe you just don’t think you can do it on your own.  This could mean spending a lot of dough on diet programs that expect you to pay for a membership as well as the cost of specialty food (provided by the program, of course).  But what happens when you reach your goal and go off the diet?  You’ll revert to old habits and probably end up gaining back all the weight you lost and more.  If you really want to adopt healthy eating and exercise habits for life, you need to find a plan that works for you and is practical for your lifestyle.  And there’s no easier way to approach the learning curve than with audio books.

You might be surprised by the number of audio books out there that are related to weight loss (although it is a very popular topic).  In fact, there are so many that you might have trouble sifting through the detritus to find the selections that are right for you.  Because it can be a little overwhelming (and you’re probably already wondering if you shouldn’t just pack it in and get fat), you might benefit from a breakdown of some of the categories of audio books you can expect to find.  This could really help to narrow down your search so that you have success right off the bat.

The first type of weight-loss audio books you’ll want to seek out are those pertaining to diet.  This is because the amount and type of food you put into your body has serious ramifications not only on your ability to lose weight, but also your ability to function normally.  Without proper diet, you can’t hope to get the energy you need to stick to an exercise routine, and frankly, you simply can’t lose weight (at least in the long term) with exercise alone.  However, there are many audio books pertaining to diet on the market.  You’ll want to avoid “fad” diets like those that have you eating only one type of food or anything that you can turn into a smoothie, for example.  Instead, seek audio books that advertise healthy eating for life as a way to learn to approach food with the proper attitude and the tools to stick with it.

You might also want to pick up an audio book on herbal supplements since you could be tempted to speed the process by taking them.  You may not know what ma huang is, for example, but you’ve likely heard of the plant’s derivative, ephedra, which was released as an unregulated herbal supplement and killed several people before being banned (herbal supplements are not regulated by the FDA, so it can be hard to know what you’re getting).  Knowing the potential benefits and drawbacks of herbal supplements will allow you to make an informed decision about whether or not to use them.

Finally, pick up some audio books on exercise.  Find ones that offer information on specific routines that can be used for weight loss (as well as which ones will work best), but take the time to select those that really will fit your lifestyle and sensibilities, providing for the formation of healthy habits for life.  And don’t forget to address the subject of using diet and exercise in concert to reach your weight loss goals and keep the pounds off.
