Sex Sells! One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell Review

November 4, 2010

Whether or not you want to admit it, there are still many fans of Sex and the City out there, myself included. That being the case, it is time to check out the audio version of One Fifth Avenue, which centers around a beautiful Greenwich Village apartment building, where an aging Queen of Society has died in the penthouse apartment. This leads to an all-out battle for her large and decadent penthouse, where members of the apartment board want to sell it for a serious profit, while others want to split it up into smaller apartments.

You will meet an unhappy married couple, Mindy and James Gooch, a fame-whore art dealer, Billy Litchfield, an older gossip columnist, Enid Merle, a sexy screenwriter, Philip Oakland, and a famous actress, Schiffer Diamond, rivaling with a young society girl, Lola Fabrikant. Each of the characters is developed beautifully, true to Bushnell’s style, making it nearly impossible to tear yourself away from this audio book.

This novel gives a sharp look at all of the unhappy rich living the high life in New York City, which is further exemplified in their interactions with one another. The plot of this book becomes much meatier when Annalisa Rice, a socialite, and her wealthy husband, purchase the penthouse for $20 million, causing serious controversy and potential scandal with all of the existing residents at One Fifth. The book takes further twists and turns, some of which are delightfully predictable, while others are entirely shocking.

Overall, this is going to be the perfect audio novel choice if you too love the guilty pleasure of reading trashy tabloids and speculating how wealthy celebrities really live. You will get a clear glimpse into higher society, which may not necessarily be a good thing. This begs the question: Is the grass always greener on the other side? That is precisely what all of the characters in the story believe since they are focused on their quest for prime real estate in New York City. Most of them believe that it is the key to their happiness, and even the Gooches who resides at One Fifth are still not satisfied since they don’t have the best apartment in the building. Will the madness ever end? Check out this juicy novel for yourself and see!
